Reverse Osmosis Systems

Besides removing sediment, dirt and algae, the Reverse Osmosis membrane also blocks healthy minerals, salts and trace minerals, which serve as a vital function to our body system. Reverse Osmosis desalinates water and produces mineral-free water for use in print- or photo shops. Long-term consumption of such de-mineralized water may be harmful and result in mineral deficiencies in the body. Also problematic is the waste of a large portion of water running through a Reverse Osmosis System (RO systems generally waste two to three gallons of water for every gallon of water they produce). In terms of removing solvents, pesticides and other volatile organic chemicals (VOC’s), Reverse Osmosis is not sufficient because the pores of the membrane are blocking only larger molecules.

Distillation

Distillation prohibits salts, metals, sediment - anything that won't boil or evaporate - from vaporizing (these substances remain in the distiller). It’s a slow process and it must be repeated several times to ensure significant water purity (producing one gallon of clean water may take several hours). Distillation can never ensure a complete separation between water and other materials - synthetic chemicals common in tap water such as pesticides, volatile organic chemicals and chlorine solutions won’t be removed, because they also evaporate together with the water. Distillers use electricity when operating the system all the time. Above all, distillation removes natural trace elements – the water becomes acidic (pH of 4 on the pH scale, thus not recommendable for people with acid-alkaline imbalances)!

Water Softeners (Deionizers)

Water Softeners operate on an ion exchange process removing calcium and magnesium ions from the water (i.e. removing the hardness), generating completely de-mineralized water for e.g. medical research and industrial needs. Water Softeners don’t reduce the level of most organic compounds, nitrates, or biological contaminants like viruses or bacteria. The elevated sodium concentration of softened water may not be healthy for people on low sodium diets, and is not recommended for watering plants, lawns and gardens.
